SWADESH: A comprehensive platform for Multimodal Neuroimaging Data launched by DBT-NBRC

New delhi(Liveindianews18). A unique brain initiative has been taken in the form of developing a project named ‘SWADESH’ by DBT-National Brain Research Centre (DBT-NBRC) that is focused on certified neuroimaging, neurochemical, neuropsychology data and analytics that is made accessible to researchers for managing brain disorders. Touted as World’s First Multimodal Brain Imaging Data and Analytics, SWADESH is specifically designed to cater to the Indian population with big-data architecture and analytics for various disease categories.

Inaugurated by Union Minister of Science and Technology Dr Jitendra Singh; the project SWADESH is aimed at strengthening research in Alzheimer diseases (AD) and the project will ultimately help the scientific community to come up with promising treatments in the same. The basic function of the project is to manage and analyse big-data architecture and modules including:

Neurodegenerative [AD, mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and Parkinson’s disease (PD)]
Neuropsychiatric (schizophrenia and bipolar disease)
Neurodevelopmental (autism and epilepsy)
COVID-19 related disorders
Other disorders & related healthy subjects

About the new age technique: SWADESH

Since the project SWADESH is aimed at managing neuroimaging databases, the backend is supported by JAVA-based workflow environments and Python. Backed by dedicated storage, SWADESH provides –

Quality Control
Data Analysis Reports
Data backups

Not only in India, but the design and development of SWADESH will facilitate the integration of multi-scale data and will also provide extensive and collaborative research worldwide. Currently, the system has data of 500 AD and MCI patients and 70 PD patients. In the control group, the system has a record of 600 healthy old individuals and 800 healthy young individuals.

Various Research Tools Developed through SWADESH:

Several clinical research tools through multimodal SWADESH has been developed by DBT-NBRC. Some of them include:

– GAURI System: This system is designed to use adaptive pattern recognition and learning schemes for predictive single or differential diagnosis, designed with MRI modalities and neuropsychological batteries.
– NINS-STAT: A high-performance, automated statistical test selection and execution software package, NINS-STAT is designed for high applicability in clinical research.

– KALPANA: It is an integrative package for the visualization, preprocessing, and quantitation of MRS data.

– PRATEEK: This system analyzes multimodal neuroimaging data that minimizes the need for expertise in handling different neuroimaging tools for processing and analyzing multimodal data.

DBT-NBRC teams are working relentlessly to expand the project to include rich multimodal neuroimaging datasets for healthy and diseased cases.

About DBT & NBRC:

An Indian government department under the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) facilitates and aims at improving biotechnology development in India through its extensive development and implementation in areas including agriculture, healthcare, animal sciences, the environment, and industry. Whereas, NBRC is the National Brain Research Centre – which is the only institute in the country dedicated to Neuroscience Research and Education.
